One of the things we see time and time again at V8Media is new customers coming to us with websites that are less than a year old but have ‘issues’. These range from not being responsive to being difficult to update using the content management solution, or promises of a highly search engine friendly site not being delivered.
More often than not, these customers end up either having to commission additional work to get their website to deliver what is required or even pay for a brand new site! So, we’ve put together a list of things you need to think about and question before you go ahead and get a new website.

Firstly, here are a few things to think about before you brief your web designer…
- What are the key objectives for the website?
- Who are you targeting?
- What key features are required and why? Or, what do you require users on the website to do? (A good web developer will then suggest what is needed and explain the benefits to you.)
- Are Calls-to-Action required on the website? (What do you want users to achieve?)
- Do you require new sales / repeat visitors to the website?
Here are a few things that you should check with your web developer before you start the contract:
- Will the website be responsive (work on all mobile devices)?
- Will the website (if required) be search engine friendly and how?
- What control will you have over the website and how?
- How simple will it be to update and who is responsible for site updates or managing content?
- Who owns the website?
- Ensure you have full details of what is included in the project; this should include a list of web pages to be setup and details on the functionality. The more complex the website, the more detailed the proposal or design specification should be beforehand
- What support will you have after the website goes live?
It is important to be very clear with your supplier about what is or isn’t included in the project and ensure that you have been given a contract outlining all aspects of the solution.
